From Flags to Satellites: How Ships Learned to Talk

For thousands of years, a ship beyond the horizon was simply gone — unreachable until it returned. The story of maritime communication is the story of shrinking that silence, from flag hoists visible a few miles to satellite links that never break.

The visual era

The oldest ship-to-ship language was sight: flags, lantern signals, semaphore arms. International signal flag codes let vessels of different nations exchange standardized messages — each flag a letter, key combinations a phrase. The system still exists; a diver-down flag or a pilot-request hoist speaks it today. But visual signaling ended where visibility did, and an ocean crossing remained an information blackout.

Wireless: the sea finds its voice

Radio changed everything. In the early twentieth century, wireless telegraphy — Morse code by radio wave — went to sea, and ships could suddenly speak across hundreds of miles. Its defining moment came with maritime disasters: distress calls summoning rescuers proved wireless was not a luxury but a lifesaving system. The SOS signal, chosen for its unmistakable rhythm, became the sea's universal cry for help, and radio officers joined crews worldwide.

Regulation born from tragedy

The Titanic disaster of 1912 exposed fatal gaps — nearby ships with radios unmanned overnight. The response built the framework of modern maritime safety: mandatory radio watches, international frequencies for distress, and eventually the SOLAS convention governing safety of life at sea. Communication rules at sea have always been written in the ink of hard lessons.

From Morse to automated distress

Through the twentieth century, voice radio joined and then displaced Morse, and by the 1990s the GMDSS — Global Maritime Distress and Safety System — automated the whole architecture: press a button and a vessel's identity and position broadcast to shore stations and satellites; emergency beacons activate themselves when a ship goes down. The professional radio officer faded into history because the system no longer depends on one listening human.

The connected ship

Today's vessel is a node on networks: satellite broadband for operations and crew welfare, AIS broadcasting identity and position to the world, weather and chart updates flowing in continuously, engines streaming diagnostics to shore offices. The commercial effects are as deep as the safety ones — fleets are managed in real time, and the centuries-old information blackout has inverted into constant visibility.
